- Visiting Britain’s National Gallery -
Today’s tourists pour into the National Gallery in their thousands, especially if it is raining, so that it is often hard to see the paintings, especially the most celebrated ones. Fortunately, the National Gallery does not have any one painting with the drawing power of the Louvre’s “Mona Lisa,” but there are a good number of paintings which many people are eager to see because they are “famous.” Still, we should be ready to ask what exactly people think they are doing when they visit the National Gallery.
Rather than following the crowds as they swirl from room to room, barely glancing at most pictures, only stopping to take a picture of the most “famous” ones, we should rather select just a very few paintings, not necessarily the most famous ones, and really look at them closely, at length. Why was any picture painted? There is a mystery in each one. Artists painted picture, then rich people bought them and used them to decorate their homes; some artists and picture became prestigious, but today we are invited to appreciate each picture as something unique and beautiful. As we take the time to really look at a picture, we enter into a relationship with it and discover it in depth, in our own way, which may be different from the way other people see it.
This book helps the reader locate the pictures in their rooms in the National Gallery, and in art history, but in the end, the most important moment comes when a particular picture begins to speak to us quietly, intimately, revealing something unexpected, giving us a sudden insight into the life that produced it, a life that it communicates to us. The pictures in the National Gallery each murmur a secret message. The crowds sweep past, not hearing them, in too much of a hurry to see the next picture, the next room. If you stop, look closely and listen carefully, you will learn something wonderful, about beauty, harmony, the mystery of creativity. The artist who produced the painting died centuries ago, yet lives on in the work we see today, wanting us to look, listen, learn, grow. Take your time, then, enjoy, be enriched! And there is no entrance fee, it is all free!

해외 여행이 자유화된 지 30년이 넘어가면서 유럽 여행을 다녀온 사람들이 상당히 많아졌습니다. 처음에는 유럽을 방문한 것만으로도 만족스럽지만, 여행을 반복할수록 유럽을 제대로 보고 싶다는 욕구가 높아지고 있습니다.
특히 유럽의 유명한 미술관과 박물관을 제대로 감상하려면 일정 수준의 배경 지식이 필요한데, 그런 지식을 얻기에 가장 적합한 곳이 내셔널 갤러리입니다. 내셔널 갤러리는 13세기 중반부터 20세기 초반 사이의 주요 작품 2,600점을 소장한 곳입니다. 프라도 미술관이나 루브르 박물관과 비교하면 작품 수가 적어 보일 수 있지만 곰브리치의 <서양미술사> 도판 중 가장 많은 작품들을 소장한 곳이 내셔널 갤러리일 정도로 그 수준이 높습니다.
